3rd TENNESSEE INFANTRY, 3rd TENNESSEE VOLUNTEERS

My Great Grandfather served from Sept 20, 1847 to July 22, 1848 with the 3rd Tennessee Volunteers, McDonald's Company, 3rd Tennessee Infantry, under Colonel Cheatum. He was listed as a Private in the list as it appeared April 4, 1847, in Company F, Captain Jones' Company. Is there anywhere I could look for more information on these companies from the Mexican War?
WHY, OH WHY, DIDN'T I PAY MORE ATTENTION IN HISTORY CLASS?
