"Drummer" rank in War With Mexico
It appears that my ancestor named Matthew Allen enlisted in Columbus, GA on 19 June, 1846 into Capt Jones Reg, GA Vols. This Reg subsequently became Co "E", Reg, GA INF. His rank in was "Drummer" and rank out was "Private". He was only 16 y/o at enlistment. Wasn't the rank of "Drummer" usually filled by young men or boys? I know I have heard the term "Drummer Boy" and they were probably called that due to their young age.
