I believe Pagan O Leary fought on the side of Benito Juarez-He was arrested in the offices of the Irish people with Stephens et al . He is reputed to have been asked to remove his hat in court and replied:
"General Juarez told me never to remove my hat in front of a lesser man".
I think I read this in Doheny's memoirs.
He was the 'ganger' in Johns Lane Augustinian Church (Thomas St, Dublin)where all or most of the stonemasons were Fenians(IRB). It is known as the Fenian church locally.
He is reputed also to have induced about 11,000 soldiers into the Fenian brotherhood.
The pagan term comes from his belief that when you died you went to Tir na nÓg.
Hope this is of use.
