I looked at the images of the record you found are transcripted wrong, the year is not 1853 but 1883, so it must be your ancestor's afterall. There are other enlistments for a Joseph P. Hilton starting Feb 2, 1870 as a Fifer.
Do you know if the family was affilated with a church? I found my 4th great grandparents obituary's recorded in their church's early records that named their parents. The LDS Family History Centers have copies of microfilmed Church records that were made in the 1930s WPA Works program. Copies are also at th NARA Libraries. Your ancestors church records might be included.
