USS Houston WWII Earl Johnson

Hi my birth father told the story that he was in the Marines, got his legs shot up and he and some other guys were let off at an island, maybe Pearl Harbor soon before the USS Houston was sank. I don't believe he'd be on the list of shipmates as he was in the Marines not a swabbie. My husband is also a former Marine, so I'm aware the Marines are under the US Navy, but I also know they are not the same. My dad did have steel plates in his legs according to my mother. He died before I was a year old. He went by Olley, but his full name was Earl Sylvester Johnson. Thanks for any help. Delilah
