Comparison of 2 versions of tree

Somehow during a re-installation of my PC just before Xmas, the wrong version of my FTM seems to have been re-installed within my FTM. Only yesterday a query from someone else made me realise the error. My backup from 16th Dec (on an external drive) has 8214 people whereas the FTM I have been adding to since then (a few people and a few scattered notes) has 8209 people. There are very likely differences in notes added.

I am terrified of running a merge as both I and friends of mine have had disasters this way rendering our trees unusable. Is there any means of running a comparison between the two - indexes of individual names and hopefully also notes - two establish which very small items I need to add in so as not to lose research by simply deleting one tree or the other?

FTM "helpdesk" has suggested loading my trees onto Ancestry to run a comparison. I maintain my own website as I prefer to have control of my own tree and so do not wish to put it on Ancestry. They have also suggested manually comparing more than 8,000 individuals and sets of notes in the two trees. I do not find this practical and feel there ought to be some computerised process of comparison available but I am no geek!

Many thanks for your help which has saved me several times in the past. Hazel Dakers
