FERDINAND USHER/ USHUER - 12TH IL CAV

This family is interesting—some things match your Frederick Ushuer. For instance, this is the only Frederick Usher in the 1880 census—a son to the widow Sarah Usher, and both of them were born in Illinois. As the eldest child listed here at 25, he would have been about 5, and his mother 20, just before the civil war. Also as the eldest, he would likely be named after his father. Then who is the “son” here named George Carpenter who is 24, and also why are there three younger Usher children? All the children had a father born in England; the mother of all was born in Illinois. At any rate, this is a family of interest to keep in mind. Is this Frederick Ushuer’s widow? They now live in Missouri.
If his widow, then there should be a widow’s military pension listed for her (do they continue if the widow remarries?).

So, Frederick was likely married when he went to war. He likely had at least one son already, maybe two. No idea what the children listed after that mean, or the difference in names. Of real interest is the fact that, if the census record above proves to be true, then your Frederick Usher was born in England. This means naturalization or immigration records should be available. –Name not at Castle Gardens (precursor to Ellis Island).

Well, somebody was receiving his military pension, at any rate.
Yes, definitely Usher, not Ushuer: ancestry.com has:
U.S. Civil War Soldiers, 1861-1865

Name: Frederick A. Usher
Regiment State/Origin: Illinois
and also:
Civil War Pension Index: General Index to Pension Files, 1861-1934

And before the war, there was a Frederick Usher in Will County, IL—which is adjacent to and just below DuPage County.
In the Will County IL genweb there is an 1850 census with a very interesting entry:

Once again, the Frederick Usher Sr. was born in England, this one, abt. 1826.
