On that Atlas for 1895 for Jacksonville area including where your John Usher & family lived, it had a railroad and also over 1,000 people resident--1 mile from Jacksonville; so quite a lot of people lived where they did, in fact--at least, by 1895. No P.O., though.

Could your Ushers have come to FL because a female Usher relative lived there, married to a Norwood? This child b. in early 1880s would be contemporary with your John Usher's children.
