Could he have been counted twice, once in each state, KS and CO? Possible. Actual census dates would have to be checked. It's a very long shot, but there's another John Usher of about the right age. In his case, the family history to that date is known, then drops off for him--at just the year your John Usher's trail begins, one state to the west.
