In the Elizabeth City, NC newspaper, The Independent, March 25, 1921, is found an article about: Capt. D. W. BARNETT and his wife, of Buxton, near Cape Hatteras. They stopped into the U. S. Coast Guard Office in Elizabeth City, NC. They were on their way to Edenton, NC to the funeral of Mrs. Barnett's brother, P. H. BELL, who died that week at age 88. Both Capt. and Mrs. BARNETT were 70 years old, and had been married 50 years. They were described as two of the most interesting characters identified with the history of the U. S. Lifesaving or Coast Guard Service. MRS. BARNETT MADE THE FIRST SIGNAL FLAGS USED IN THE U. S. LIFESAVING SERVICE ON THE NC COAST. Capt. BARNETT was a surfman at Cape Hatteras Station for more than 18 years and was was for more than ten years Keeper of Hatteras Inlet Station. In his day he did much heroic work and participated in the rescue of scores of lives from many historic wrecks. He helped rescue 22 men from the Schooner George W. WELLS; 24 men from the ISLE of IONA; and 24 men fron the Steamer BREWSTER. When the crew of the Steamer BREWSTER were taken on board Capt. BARNETT'S lifeboat, they so overloaded it that water stood six inches deep on deck. But thus handicapped the little lifeboat with its stalwart crew battled its way to shore saving everyone. The records of the service contain many a thrilling story of the deeds of Capt. BARNETT and the men who served with him at Hatteras in his active days. I post this only as a resource.
