I am researching my late brother's military experience to include in a family history book. His name was Sherrill Hudson Frye.I have seen a picture of him standing outside a tent which had the 50th General Hospital sign on it.In 1990 a few months before he passed away from the effects of diabetes I talked with him.He didn't want to recall his war years as they were to painful, but he did talk about were he was in Europe. The following is what he told me.
He was drafted in early 1943 and sent to Camp Carson for basic training and then sent to Scotland with the 50th General Hospital. He was trained as a combat medic. On a Thursday night he was given a long weekend pass and went to Edinburgh. When he returned Sunday evening, the hospital was gone. The guard gave him a train ticket to London and an address to find where he was to go.At London, they gave him a ticket to Wales. When he arrived in Wales, he was issued field gear and placed on a landing barge. This was June 6, 1944 (his 20th birthday). The next day they sailed and he landed at Normandy where the beach was still under German fire.
He said he was at the front as a combat medic from Normandy, through the south of France and their unit was assigned to Patton's third Army when it was formed. He said the coldest he had ever been was when they were placed on an open troop transport truck and sent up to what became known as the Battle of the Bulge. He said he was wounded for the second time near Frankford and sent back to Luxenburg were he was when the war ended.
He said he had enough points that they flew him back from the south of France all the way to California where he was discharged outside Sacremento (Camp Beal?).
I remember he had three battle stars on his European ribbon and a purple heart with an extra button on it and the Third Army patch.
I didn't think to ask him if he was assigned to a different unit when he went to Wales or was still with the 50th.After his service he did pre-med and then became a doctor practicing in Houston for the last 25 years of his life.
I would appreciate any information you might have on him at Camp Carson and/or in Scotland. He was an excellent softball pitcher and played on the 50th's team in Scotland.
Also I see a reference to a paper on the history of the 50th presented at a 1965 reunion.Would it be possible to get a copy of it?
Thanks for any information you can give.
