must be an American citizen to be in American army?

On army records would it state anywhere that the enlisted person is an American citizen? The problem my family is having is this.
My uncle was norn in New york State. My grandparents came back here to live in Canada after my uncle was born. When he was about 17 he was made to leave Canada. He joined the american army 1947-1949. Came back to canada. Got married here and had a daughter. In 1951 he and my aunt and cousin moved back to the States. My cousin is now in the position after all these years of living and working in the U.S. to having to prove that my uncle resided in the States for at least 5 years prior to her birth in order for her to claim american Status. She could be deported back here to canada. My aunt and uncle were told that because my uncle was born in the States that she would automatically have a duel citizenship. That proved not to be so. My uncle is deseased. Any help would be greatly appreciated.
