US Army Transportation Corps

Does anyone have any info on the US Army Transportation used on small ships in New Guinea in the 1940's. My father-in law Alfred James Scrivens was apparently on these although we have conflicting identification of his uniform as being this or Merchant Marine, He was born 29th August 1907 in New Zealand and died 1975 in Brisbane Australia. His uniform was Khaki and he is wearing a white peak hat with the silver american eagle on top of gold crossed anchors. He has 3 stripes on his shoulder epaulettes. I have seen a photo of the same and it had Merchant Marine but now someone else has come forward on Merchantile Marine saying that it's US Army Transport. Can anyone help with any info?
