Military Service Records are kept at the National Archives (NARA) www.archives.gov If he was in the Army or Army Air Corp there was a fire in 1973 that destroyed up to 80 % of WWII records. You can search 1973 fire and read what alternate ways to locate information.
Naval/Marine Service records were not stored there at the time and are available. Here is a website for information:

By the way I find in the California Birth records, born in Alameda County:
William Thompson b. June 19, 1919 mother's maiden name Brandli
William G. Thompson b. Sept. 28, 1919 mother's maiden name Maloon
I find 2 men named William Thompson enlisted in U.S. Army from Alameda County b. 1919, one with a middle initial G.
At the below link, in the search box type:
Thompson, William California and there should be 59 results found.
Scroll down to find those with residence county: Alameda
(if you believe he was living there at time of enlistment.)
The records found give you a Service number that will help with any search.

At Ancestry's "WWII Navy Aircraft Carrier Muster Rolls 1939 to 1949". I find the names William G. Thompson and William George Thompson as assigned to Navy Aircraft Carriers 1939-1949.
Try the local VA office to see if he filed for any state or Federal G.I. Benefits and contact the funeral home to see if he had Military Honors and if he was a member of any Veterans organizations.
