*NOTES FOR THIS FAMILY*
Most of the above information that I have came from Marianne Dunlap and is posted on her web page located at( http://marianne.dunlap.home.att.net/http://marianne.dunlap.home.att.net/ ).Marianne's e-mail address is ([email protected]) if you need to contact her.Marianne has made several trips to Fayetteville, Arkansas and has made many of the families connections.
Mrs. Ray Dillard is Francis Marcile b 1918 Monticello, Drew Co., AR daughter of William Carson and grandaughter to Sarah Belle McKiever/McKeever & James Henry Carson found under 2nd Generation # 2.Marcile Carson Dillard/Dilard has some of her information dated in the 1960's.This is the information/family file that I was given by my cousin Jay B. McKiever who is a descendant through William James & Cora Uptigrove/Uptegrove McKiever's line.(We both descend from different children of William James and Cora Uptegrove McKiever.I descend from the oldest child, Abbie Fennon (Fenton) McKiever Culbertson and he descends from George William "Buddy" & Bessie Jordan McKiever).Marcile's grandmother Sarah Belle McKiever Carson and our great grandfather William James McKiever were children of William Henry & Almeda Elizabeth Wilson McKiever/McKeever. There is more information on the family in the book Old Times Not Forgotten by Rebecca DeArmond.
I have a picture of Marcile and some of the McKiever and Uptigrove family that was made on the old Mae Ferguson Place in Drew/Ashley county Arkansas in the early 1900's.I don't know for sure which county the "old place" was in.
**2nd Generation** William (2) H. (Henry) b 31 March 1838-42? -Married 16 May 1867 Almeda Elizabeth Wilson-b 1 April 1845, Walton Co., Georgia-d 4 June 1882 Drew Co., ARK after the birth of Arch Lumpkin McKiever.Buried Greenhill Cem., Drew Co., ARK.Almeda Elizabeth was a daughter of Benjamin Jackson & Sarah Brewer Wilson (daughter of Hundley Brewer of Pittsylvania Co., VA).Benjamin ( b 27 Nov 1814-d 25 July 1871 when his team ran away with him) was a son ofJoseph and Sarah "Sally" Pennington Wilson (m 1798 Oglethorpe Co., VA).Sarah was a daughter ofSarah & Abel Pennington II of N.C. & Tuscaloosa Co., Alabama. There is a Power of Attorney, dated Oct. 1819 in Clay Co., KY for Abel Pennington II,given to Abel's II brother William, that mentions Abel IIdaughter Sally (Sarah) Wilson.Abel II and William are the sons of Abel I who has made a Will in Tuscaloosa Co., Alabama dated 26 Dec., 1818.
After the death of Almeda, William (Henry)McKeever age 62 is found in the 1900 Census, Household # 99,Veasy TWP,Drew Co., AR with his wife Matilda age 47 and a boarder by the name of Ola Hill. They have been married for 14 years.William gives his birth year as 1838.She states that she is the mother to one child and one child is living.
Pg. 3
The question is if William is the father to that child why is that child not living in the home? She and William have been married 14 years so if the child is 13 or 14 then it should still be at home.It is possible that the child could have been working on a neighbors farm but it is more likely that the child was old enough to be living on its own.I wonder if she was married before and ifthe child was from a previous marriage and that is why itwould not have been counted in their home?

********Notes and other interesting thoughts-
*The following is a list of the various ways I have seen the McKiever family name spelled in print and the years (through marriage, census, obituaries, newspapers, etc...records) the spelling was noted.
*1840* Mississippi Census, Tippah Co., Northern District, Roll M 704-219---- McKeever, Daniel lists 1 Male 20-30 which is Daniel, it lists 1 Female 20-30 which would be his wife Mariah (Dunlap), and 1 other Male aged under 5 which would be their child John. They had moved to the Washington Co., AR area by the 1850 census. This information I got from Marianne Dunlap and I haven't verified yet.I'm sure it will check out because everything she sent me I have been able to verify for myself thus far.I started on the family from 1850 and tracked it forward in time. The family today spells their name McKiever and it began to change early on but in the 1920 Drew Co., AR Census the family of William James & Cora still had the surname spelling of McKeever.I would imagine that the census taker would have had as much to do with the spelling as anyone. So we can say for certain that the McKeever and McKiever lines are the same family.
Pg 6
*1850* Arkansas, Wash. Co., Prairie TWP ----DanielM. Keeven/M. Keivin/M.Keeven (depending on how someone chooses to read it).If you look for it under Mc Keever through Ancestry.com it will not show up as McKeever.I traced it by looking for the name Mariah (Daniel's wife) and using her birth year, state and then comparing the children's names.7 of the children are present at this time (ages range from 9 down to 4 months). The two oldest children were born in Mississippi,Mary and James are born in MO (possibly some where in the Ozarks just over the border from Washington Co., AR ?), and from Margaret (age 3) on the children are born in Arkansas.
I have been told that the period after the capital M. is a shorthand mark for the surnames that start with the Mac sound. After looking at other names in this same census with the Mc prefix I do see it was commonly used by the census taker.
*1860* Arkansas, Wash. Co., Richland TWP-----Daniel & Mariah (Dunlap)McCravin/McCraven/McCriocie?/McCramers.Once again the reading/spelling is open to interpretation. The penmanship is awful and the spelling is even worse! Only through the names of the family (parents and children in the household # 1868) do we really begin to be able to piece together the migration of this family. We can't rely on the spelling of the surname to connect the pieces so we will group the family by the names of the11 children. The names/ages/birth states fit so I think we know this is our family McKeever. There are 4 more children in the home at this date bringing the total up to 11.So at one time all of these children lived at home and their ages ranged from John age 20 down to Harriet age 3.And among these children Sarah Isabel and Margaret were either twins (because they are listed as the same age) or their birth years are very close.I believe Marianne Dulap has the dates as just one year apart so I guess she has documentation from some record that gave her a specific birthdate.
*1870* Arkansas, Wash. Co., Fayetteville- Post Office.McKever, Daniel, wife Mariah and 5 of the 11 children are living at home.Mary age 22 gives her occupation as ? (it looks like St. possibly for state? and a word that looks like weaver?).I guess it could be St. (Stay Home ?)Once again it is open for interpretation.
*1880* Arkansas, Wash. Co., Richland TWP, Household #153 Murphy, John & wife Susan Parlee (McKeever) age 21,Margaret or Maryan McKeeven/McKeever? age 28( I think it looks like Maryan age 28-Sister of Susan Parlee McKeever but the age is questionable.Mary Francis could be Maryan ( I guess you could get Ann out of Francis) because she was closer to being 10-11 years older than Susan Parlee. If this is sister Margaret then the age difference is only supposed to be 4 years so which sister to Susan Parlee is this?Susan Parlee McKeever Murphy's grandmother Francis Dunlap age 89 is in the household as well.
In the same county and township but enumerated differently I find Noah Fry age 34 & wife Elisabeth (McKeever) age 28.Noah is a Farmer and Elisabeth is occupied in Keeping House. They live next door to the Nelley Maguire family. In 1900 I find them in Washington Co., AR in the Richland TWP.They are listed as Noah O. Fry age 56 who
Pg 7
gives his birth date as June 1843 and he states he and Elizabeth age 48 have been married for 22 years. There daughter Alta gives her birthdate as Nov. 1881 and she is 18 years old.I have Noah and Elizabeth's marriage as 28 March 1878 (Online database from Hunting for Bears, comp.Arkansas Marriages 1820-1949 Provo, Utah:My Family.com, Inc., 2004.)The original data was taken from county courthouse records or extracted from copies of the original records in microfilm, microfiche, or book format, located at the Family History Library. From the same database I pulled a copy of Paralee McIver (McKeever) & John Murphey who married 13 August 1879 in Washington Co., AR.She is found in 1860 listed as Susan age 6 and again in 1880 Wash.Co., AR listed as Susan P. Murphey. These two sisters are Daniel & Mariah Dunlap McKeevers children.
*1900* McKeever, William age 62 & wife Matilda age 47 who have been married for 14 years. They have a boarder Ola Hill age 21 (birthdate June 1878) listed in their household in Veasey TWP, Drew Co., AR.
*1910* McKeever, William J. (James) age 37 with wife Cora A. ( Uptigrove/Uptegrove) age 35 and children Finton ( Abbie Fennon, My grandmother) age 10, George (William known as "Buddy" and father to W.J. and grandfather to Randy, Leslie, and Jay B. McKiever of Drew Co., AR) age 8, Oscar age 6 (don't know anything about him), James (Lavaughn) age 4, and a daughter Winona age 2 ( I know nothing about this child either). The McKeever's neighbors are the Richard Thurman family. They are located in the Veasey TWP of Drew Co., AR.
*1920* McKeever, William J.(this is hard to read and when doing a search on Ancestry.com the name came up Adian so look for Cora A. or one of the children to locate this family when using the service at Ancestry.com).Something odd about this one is that on the last line is mentioned child Effis V as a son then in the next column is listed as a Female, White, and 2 years of age. Those of us in the family know that Effis listed here is Effice McKiever who married Ellwood "Dot" Hollinger who had sons named Steve & Houston. The family has for neighbors the to John DeWitt family and the Marion E. Murphy family.Sometimes Effice is found or listed as Effie.
*1930* Household # 155 in Veasey TWP for Drew Co., AR we find McKeever, William (James), Cora , Lavaughn, Effice B andDaniel L..The 3 oldest children are gone.Abbie Fennonmarried 26 Jan 1930 in Drew Co., AR to Roy Culbertson from Pulaski Co., IL.George William is married and living with his family in household #157 with Wife Bessie (Jordan) and son Harold age 2.Ella Myrtle is out of the home and presumed to be married.
**Additional Notes**
1.Roy Culbertson (husband of Abbie Fennon McKiever)descends from "Irish" Andrew the father ofSamuel Culbertson who was 3-4 years of age when his father brought him to America.Samuel died in Washington Co., TN in 1799.More on the Culbertson family can
Pg 8
be found in the book written in 1923-24 by Dr. Lewis R. Culbertson.Andrew's information islocated in "C.Part Fourth" starting on pg. 44, Samuel is Chapter V, Fourth Generation, etc.The Culbertson Family was the largest family that contributed its kin from the War of 1748 and including the Indian Wars 1755-58 and "The answer to freedoms call" 1775-1783.There were aproximatley 42 members of the Culbertson clan that fought throughout the war. This family of Culbertsons settled the area in PA known as "Culbertson Row" fashioned after the "Culbertson Row" in Ireland.
2.The Uptigrove family descends from Elijah & Lydia Collins Uptegrove/Uptigrove found in the 1830 Census for Henderson Co., TN, Roll 177, Pg. 105.There are Males listed as 1 between 40-50(Elijah-head of Household), 1 between 15-20 ( child-Nathaniel Frank), and 1 between 5-10.Females are listed as 1 between 30-40 ( wife-Lydia), 1 between 15-20, 1 between 10-15, 1 between 5-10, and 2 under 5.
*1840 Henderson Co., TN is Elijah and his son Nathaniel Frank (b Abt 1814 KY/TN ?) found in seperate households in Carroll Co., TN.Nathaniel Frank (b Abt 1814) is listed with his (1) wife Nancy Kee and one Male child under 5 years of age. This is the first time we find Nathaniel Frank after he has started his own family.Nathaniel Frank's wife (1) Nancy Kee(daughter of John & Mary Daniel Kee) and wife (2) is Martha Faulden whom he married 12-2-1847 Carroll Co., TN.
* Nathaniel Uptegrove/Uptigrove had sisters namedJane (b Abt 1835), Susan (b Abt 1831 TN), and Hannah ( b Abt 1833).Hanna C.who married Elija Pinkston 10-24-1855 in Carroll Co., TN, sister Lydia Jane (Jane b Abt 1835 TN) who married William Solomon Butler 8-30-1854 in Carroll Co., TN (William Solomon was a son of Thomas & Livinia ? Butler), sister Susan ( b Abt 1831) who married Andrew Robinson 3-13-1853 in Carroll Co., TN.Nathaniel Frank (b Abt 1814 KY/TN ?) had brothers named Elisha (possibly named for his father Elijah's brother/brother-in-law Elisha?) and Elijah (named for his father, Elijah was born Abt 1839 IL and Elijah served in Co. D, 7th TN US Cavalry during the Civil War he was stationed at Fort Anderson in Western Ky. and is buried in the Mounds National Cemetery in Pulaski Co., IL).Elisha married Adaline Smith 6-24-1860 in Bedford Co., TN.I also have a William C. Uptegrove married to Elizabeth Chambers 4-16-1845 in Carroll Co., TN. I am unsure of the connection of William but believe him to be another son of Elijah & Lydia Jane Collins Uptegrove. The Uptigrove name is spelled various ways for the brides and grooms UPTEGROVE/UPTENGROW/UPTERGROVE/UPTIGROVE in the book titled EARLY WEST TENNESSEE MARRIAGES, VOLUME I, GROOMS ( and Volume II, Brides) by Byron & Barbara Sistler, Pub. 1989.

Ed High will marry the next door neighbors grandchild Lizzie Uptegrove in Ashley County in 1894.* Houshold # 4117- Nathaniel Updegrov, age 56 born VA?, daughter Mary 26? *1900 Census for Arkansas is the first time I ever find an Uptigrove on any census for this state.I did find the G.W. Uptegrove family and on the same page I find William H. McKeever living, only several households away, by himself.
I would like to hear from any of the descendants from the families mentioned above
