John Upham was the first to bear the name in America. He arrived in Massachusetts in 1635 and lived in the Malden area .. with others who had come with him in what was known as the Hull Colony. His family and a lot of his descendants stayed nearby, only gradually going elsewhere during the 1700's, and 1800's.
I think of them as a New England family, although they went to the mid west, California, Canada and most parts of the United States.
