LAENEN/LANE/UPDIKE; Somerset Co., NJ; 1700s [LONG!] + BRAGAW COLLINS FORCE JOHNSON SAVAGE SCHENCK SMOCK Q. Was Eleanor/Nelly-5 LANE (Gizebert-4, Mathias-3, Gysbrecht-2 "Gilbert" LAENEN, Matthys-1 Jansen) the wife of Roliph-5 UPDIKE (John-4, Lawrence-3, Johannes-2, Louris-1 Jansen)? I am seeking any evidence to support or refute the theory detailed below. For many years, I have been actively seeking the identify of Roliph-5 UPDIKE'S wife. This week, a new theory emerged during a rapid exchange of emails with several fellow UPDIKE and LANE researchers. I am extremely grateful to these correspondents; their names are provided below in conjunction with the information that they have provided. Roliph-5 UPDIKE, son of John-4 & Mary (BRAGAW) UPDIKE, b. NJ ca. 1750; d. Ulysses, Tompkins Co., NY ca. 1830; named after maternal uncle, Roelof-3 BRAGAW. His name is seen as Rulef, Rolif, Ruliph, Rulif, Rulof, Roelef, Ralph, etc. Roliph was farmer in (then Montgomery, Somerset County, now) Princeton, Mercer Co., NJ and Ulysses, NY, where he settled shortly after 1800. The name of his wife is not identified in Charles Wilson Opdyke's landmark work, The op Dyck Genealogy: Containing the Opdyck-Opdycke-Opdyke-Updike American Descendants of the Wesel and Holland Families ([hereinafter Opdyke] [Albany, NY: Weed, Parsons & Co., 1880], p. 250). Margaret Force Christensen has been seeking the origins of her ancestress, Jerusha (UPDIKE) FORCE, b. ca. 1769/70, as an undocumented dau. of Roliph-5 UPDIKE or his brother Gilbert. David & Jerusha (UPDIKE) FORCE were m. ca. 1790; they resided in Somerset Co., NJ and Tompkins Co., NY. Their dau. Hannah m. Andrew T. GERMAN. By GERMAN family records, Hannah was reportedly "the dau. of David FORCE and Jerusha UPDIKE FORCE, WHOSE MOTHER'S MAIDEN NAME WAS LANE." Margaret inquired of Michael Morrissey if he was familiar with "The Life and Family of Gilbert UPDIKE [son of Roliph-5]" (SLC #929.273 A1 #490). This document assumes that Jerusha was Roliph-5 UPDIKE's dau. because Jerusha and Gilbert-6 were both present at the Battle of Princeton, according to family legend. Mike relayed this correspondence to me which included his observation that Roliph-5 UPDIKE lived near Ralph LANE in NJ. Based on the possibility that Jerusha (UPDIKE) FORCE may have been Roliph-5's dau., I immediately launched a search to determine if Ralph LANE might be the father of the elusive Mrs. Roliph-5 UPDIKE. A quick search at RootsWeb's WorldConnect project revealed that Ralph LANE was the son of Mathias-3 LANE (Gysbrecht-2 "Gilbert" LAENEN, Matthys-1 Jansen) and Ann/Antje-3 SCHENCK (Garret-2 Roelofse, Rolof-1 Martense). Recognizing the LANE family to be of the same origins as my VAN PELT ancestors, I contacted Dorothy Koenig--one our favorite DUTCH-COLONIES listers, the Editor of "New Netherland Connections," and a fellow descendant of the LAENEN VAN PELT family. Through Dorothy's quick research and additional on-line searches on my part, including the WorldConnect database of Linda Boorom, it quickly became apparent that Mrs. Roliph-5 UPDIKE was *not* the dau. of Ralph & Susannah (-----) LANE. However, naming patterns and associations in common with other individuals soon caused us to consider the possibility that Mrs. Roliph UPDIKE was closely related to Ralph LANE. Peter UPDIKE & Jacob SARTORE were executors to the will of Ralph LANE's wife, Suzannah (-----) LANE of Montgomery Township, made 1810, proved 1811 (Somerset Wills, Book A, p. 317 cited in "Lane Families of somerset and Vicinity" by A. Van Doren Honeyman, Somerset County Historical Quarterly Vol. II [p. 201]); William UPDIKE Jr., John SAVIDGE and Jos. H. SKELTON were witnesses. Samuel UPDIKE & David JOHNSON made the inventory. Peter UPDIKE was probably Roliph-5's brother; Samuel & William Jr. were probably the sons of Roliph's brother, William-5 UPDIKE, who m. Naomi JOHNSON. David JOHNSON was probably the husband of Roliph's sister, Mary; According to Mike Morrissey, the property of Peter UPDIKE & John SAVIDGE was adjacent to Ralph LANE's in 1813 and William UPDIKE lived nearby. Mike raised an interesting sidebar question--was Suzannah (-----) LANE related to the UPDIKEs? I suggested to Dorothy that Ralph LANE's brother Gilbert-4 LANE might have been the father of Mrs. Roliph UPDIKE, based solely on the given names found in common between the family groups and a number of daughters with no known husbands born in the right time frame. Dorothy located the will abstract of "Gizebort Lane, of the Western Precinct, Somerset County, [NJ]" in NJ "Calendar of Wills, 1801-1805" (p. 264-5), proved 12 April 1804. Gizebert (Gysbert/Gilbert) left L-100 to each of his daughters upon their mother's death and he also gave to his daughter, Eleanor [no married surname given!], the lot of land she now lives on, during her life, and then the same to HER SON, GILBERT. William COLLINS witnessed this will; he was married to Susannah LANE, dau. of Ralph & Suzannah (-----) LANE. Thus, brothers Gilbert-4 LANE and Ralph-4 LANE both lived in close proximity to Roliph-5 UPDIKE. From other sources, we know that Gizebert-5 LANE was m. to his first cousin, Eleanor/Neeltje SMOCK, dau. of Hendrick & Maria "Mary" (SCHENCK) SMOCK. Mike Morrissey located the following: County of Monmouth... 1741... Gysbert LANE... obtained license of marriage for himself and for Eleanor SMOCK of said county, spinster... [w] Rob't SAVAGE. Wm MADOCK. Recall that John SAVIDGE witnessed the will of Suzannah (-----) LANE; perhaps he was related to "Rob't SAVAGE." Roliph-5 UPDIKE's brother Jacob m. Anna SAVAGE. According to Dutch naming patterns, Roliph-5 UPDIKE should have named his eldest son JOHN after the paternal grandfather. No such son is know to have existed; if one did, he probably d. young. The eldest known son of Roliph-5 UPDIKE was GILBERT-6 UPDIKE. As we look at the other names of Roliph-5 UPDIKE's children, it appears quite possible that Eleanor/Nelly-5 LANE, dau. of Gizebert/Gilbert- 4 LANE and Eleanor/Neeltje SMOCK, b. ca. 1752, was Roliph-5's UPDIKE's wife (birth order uncertain): 1. [Jerusha-6, b. 1769/70, m. David FORCE not identified in Opdyke.] 2. Gilbert, b. 1775, perhaps named after maternal grandfather, Gilbert-4 LANE and paternal uncle Gilbert-5 UPDIKE. 3. Matthias, perhaps named after maternal great-grandfather Mathias-3 LANE and great-uncle Matthias-4 LANE. 4. Ralph, b. near Princeton, NJ 1785, perhaps named after father Roliph-5 UPDIKE and maternal great-uncle Ralph LANE. 5. [Mary "Polly," b. ca. December 1785; not identified in Opdyke; perhaps named after paternal grandmother Mary (BRAGAW) UPDIKE and maternal aunt Maria-5 LANE.] 6. Eleanor "Nellie," perhaps named after mother, Eleanor (LANE) UPDIKE and maternal grandmother, Eleanor/Neeltje (SMOCK) LANE 7. Catherine, perhaps named after maternal aunt Catherine-5 "Caty" LANE. 8. Peter, perhaps named after paternal uncle Peter-5 UPDIKE. If this theory is proven correct, Eleanor (LANE) UPDIKE, becomes one chain in an unbroken matrilineal descent of 15 generations from Aeltie (COOL) VAN COUWENHOVEN down to my great-grandmother, Mary (WILLIAMSON) STREETER and on down to her great-great- granddaughters. If anyone else is aware of living matrilineal descendants from one of the early "grandmothers" in this chain, DNA analysis could be also used to support or refute this theory. http://www.perry.streeter.com
