I neglected to mention yesterday (in the above message) that the fact that Abraham Updike served in the Revolutionary War, also makes it likely he was born in 1764 or earlier as was stated by his great-grandson, Manley Withrow Updike, quoted in the 1889 Opdyck Genealogy. Unless the John Opdyke who married Rebecca Wharton had an earlier marriage, it seems more likely Abraham was a brother rather than a son of John. Below is Mike Morrissey's reply, pasted with his permission: I think it is likely he was the son of William and Nancy as well. Nancy was the daughter of Hope Carpenter and Mary Crane. She was younger than William, being born sometime between 1724-1730. Having a son born in 1764 would be quite possible for her. I can't remember what I might have shared earlier, but other indications of a connection: 1) The Op Dyck Genealogy speculates about a connection between their descendants (Zachariah Opdyke, grandson of Abraham Updike, pg 395). 2) Settlement similarities: some of the sons of John Opdyke, including William and Isaac, moved to Troy, Rensselear Co., and Albany, NY. According to the 1855 Census of Albion, Orleans, NY, Jacob Updike, son of Abraham, was born in Rensselear, NY in 1801. The family of Zachariah's mother, Margaret Rector, was from Rensselear, NY. John Opdyke and Rebecca Wharton were married on 10 Nov 1773 in PA. It is unlikely that they would have had a son who married in 1790, as Abraham did. More likely, it was an uncle that William and Isaac followed, not an older brother. Notify Administrator about this message?
