Thomas Upchurch killed in 1909 was not the son of Gillium Upchurch & Eliza Murray. The Thomas Upchurch that was murdered was per deposition of G.W. Brown " a low, heavy set man, weighed about 160 lbs, about 30 years old" Thomas, the son of Gillium and Eliza was 64 years old in 1909.Also Eliza and Gillium did not have a son named Gilliam. Skip to next generation. Gillium and Eliza had a son Thomas born about 1845 and he had sons, Gillium and Thomas (born 1880) age 29 in 1909.
The defendant, Bob Meadows was 29 years old per testimony and the son of John Bant Meadows. "wife of Thomas Upchurch was moved to John Bant Meadows house two days before shooting". The wife of the deceased Thomas Upchurch was Ella Meadows. To repeat: I believe that the deceased Thomas Upchurch was the son of Thomas Upchurch and Martha Malone.This Thomas being the son of eliza and Gillium Upchurch.
PROOF: 1900 census Jackson Co: HH of John Meadows age 48 and wife Mary age 40 .... Robert age 21(defendant) Ella age 18 ( wife of deceased) and Hoover, Fowler, Willie, Mattie, Dillard, and Roxie.
1910 census Jackson Co. page 121A Dist 11. HH of John Meadow age 55 widower is Bob age 29 (defendant), Willie, Dillard, Roxie, Sybil, UPCHURCH Ella age 27 and Upchurch female 1year 6 mos (can't read name) Wife and child of Thomas Upchurch, deceased.
From deposition of Gillam Upchurch: " Thomas Upchurch was my brother...shot 11th district...I live about 21/2 miles away. Living in Civil district 1 on the 1910 census in Gainsborough (about 2 1/2 miles from Flynn's Lick) is Gillum Upchurch and his wife Minnie. Thomas and Martha Malone Upchurch had a son Gillum born about 1866
On reel# 122 Chancery Court. The father, Thomas's second wife Martha Wheeler Upchurch has filed a bill of complaint against Gillem and Minner Upchurch...record makes clear that this is the family and land in dispute that belonged to Old Gillum born 1810 he was left a life estate by first wife Sarah Anderson. So I assume that this Gillium had a brother, Thomas who was killed in 1909 and that both were the sons of Thomas 1845 and Martha Malone Upchurch.
On 1900 Jackson Co. census is a Thomas Upchurch born October 1880 age 19. I believe that this is the youngest child of Martha Malone and Thomas Upchurch (son of Gillum and Eliza Murray) There is no Thomas Upchurch on the 1900 census in Illinois age @19...so if this Thomas lived in Illinois it might have been before 1900 and his marriage to Ella Meadows, or Just after.
If someone can come up with an additional Gillum who had a brother, Thomas....please share....
Maybe we can solve this puzzle.
