family history......
I had the pleasure of corresponding with a family member by the name of Philip Untalan. He has given me great insight as too where the Untalans come from. The following is the e-mail I got from him:
Hi,
Thanks for responding . . . yes, anybody that carries that name Untalan is definitely related to an Untalan that "by-word-of-mouth" took roots from the Philippines, specifically from Pangasinan Province. Untalan is uncommon name. It is a unique name. And according to my Spanish Language Professor (who was a Catholic Priest in Manila), it is a Spaniard lastname which nearly means "the act of putting something to one's face" like a make-up, maskara, or lotion or cream...probably. I never had a change to research what really does the word Untalan means in Spaniard's Dictionary in Spain, at the Era.
I typed our Lastname from Goggle, and led me to that website...I read all the entries...it took me a while...I tried putting an entry, but it seems that there is a technical problem, by all means--please---post this email that I am writing to you.
I am sure that we are related to someone from Spain that came to the islands of the Philippines during the Spanish Conquest or the Galleon Trade during the 1500's. Probably, an Elite or has a Royal Blood that could be in a ship during those conquests by Spain. I have not tried doing research from Spain's end, or should I say BEGIN.
The Untalans from the Philippines are rooted in the Province of Pangasinan, that is within the one of the three biggest island in the Philippines. (the Philippines has 7,100 islands and islets...and still growing...)
When I was in one of the Colleges, I have met Michael Untalan that came from Batangas Province, a different part of the islands, what's interesting is that his roots points to Pangasinan.
I have worked with Lovell, from Visayas Island--again, his roots from Pangasinan.
In San Juan, the heart of Metro Manila, Diego Untalan a lawyer, the same.
It was exciting when I read the entries, I remembered that my aunt, mentioned the two brothers by those names, Casimero and Marcos (that's the way these names are commonly be spelled in the Philippines, by the way or I could be totally wrong) when I was interviewing her about the Untalan.
The names came out, when I asked her about my Grand Father, Marcelino (who was born in July,1896 and died in Oct./Nov. of 1927, three months after my Father, Fausto was born in August 7). I need to confirm with my Aunt if I remembered it right, that these two brothers, are immediate family members of Marcelino Bauzon Untalan who was married to Pacencia Dioquino Untalan (Born in 1896, and died in January of 1930/31).
The parents of Marcelino were: Ramon Untalan and Logarda Bauzon.
My great-great grand father is Don Domingo Untalan. I am assuming that this man is my connection to Spain.
And if, indeed that the Untalans of Guam are directly related to Marcelino or Ramon or must be Don Domingo, the Untalans of Pangasinan, then are the bridge to the original Untalans of Spain.
Let me list down the siblings of Marcelino:
1. Feliciana Untalan-Vicente (with 10 children, 5 live in East)
2. Maria Teresa Untalan-Alvarez(1)
3. Gregorio Untalan (none)
4. Maria Mercedes Untalan-Fernadez(6, 1 lives in Hawaii)
5. Ordon Untalan (5)
6. Fausto Untalan(5: 2 lives in CA + 1 in Feb., 2 in Seattle)
Patrick, the same with my Dad "any Untalan you meet, is family". Untalan is uncommon name, unique and traceable!
Until the next e-mail.
Philip
