HAMMER On July 27,1903 Joseph C. Hammer, aged 80 years.
DEATH OF JOSEPH C. HAMMER.
Joseph C. Hammer, a member of the Dunkard congregation, died on Tuesday at his
home, Wissahickon Avenue, above Carpenter Street, in his 80th year. He was born
in Germantown, and was a descendant of Samuel Hammer and Julia Keyser, who were
early Pennsylvania Dunkards. At the outbreak of the Rebellion Mr. Hammer
enlisted with a Germantown company. When the volunteer fire department was
organized he was one of the first to join, and remained a member until the paid
fire department succeeded it. He was for fifty-five years a member of
Philomathean Lodge, No. 10,I.O.O.F. Mr. Hammer was married twice, his first
wife, who was Hannah Burnbeater, having died in 1868. His second wife, who was a
Miss Unruh, survives him, with five children. The funeral was held on Thursday
and the interment took place in the Dunkard burying ground, Main Street, above
Sharpnack.
