Thomas Underwood and Margaret Hammett
Posted by: James Greene (ID *****8011) Date: August 14, 2007 at 10:58:50

I am searching for a daughter of Thomas Underwood and Margaret Hammett of Spartanburg Co., SC. Her name is Mary Polley Underwood. The book "Hammett Families" states she was born 1800-1810, and she married Edward Davis 9 Dec. 1824 in Roane Co. Tn. I believe this is almost impossible. Because Margaret was 61 years old in 1800, and Thomas died in 1799. I think the Mary Polley that married Edward Davis, is the daughter of John Underwood, and Jane Utley.
Deed Book K, pg. 156-157, Spartanburg Co. Mar. 26 1805, Henry Cannon, Wm. Underwood, Thomas Underwood, Enoch J. Underwood, William Robinson, Abner Underwood, William McDaniel, and Polly Underwood, legatees of Thomas Underwood, deceased to John Underwood. 292 acres. This is the land belonging to Thomas Underwood, that died in 1799. All the children signed.
Deed book L, pgs. 324-25, 23 Feb. 1808, Spartanburg Co., SC
William Mcdowell sells 350 acres on both sides of Greens Creek to Underwood and Green. Polley Underwood, witness.
( the index to this abstract, lists the name Willis Green, no Underwood first name.)
Deed book O, pgs. 106-07, 11 June 1813, Spartanburg Co., SC. Willis and Polley Green sell to Archibald Lester 250 acres on both sides of Green's Creek. Half of the grant to William McDowell, 1792. Polley Green renounces her dower.
This might indicate that Polley Underwood, daughter of Thomas and Margaret, married a Willis Green.
If you know this family, and can help me with this, I will greatly appreciate it.
