Hi Again Lynne
I think we need help with this one! The Underwood names you give don't match mine - but that's not surprising because I've got so few on my tree. James Underwood (1765) married Margaret Baxter (b 1772) and I've got 4 children for them - Mary, Margaret, Janet and Elizabether. As they were all girls the Underwood name then disappears from my tree. Mary (b1795) is my ancestor. however there could have been more children, including sons - your William would have been the right age.
I've also got loads of Griersons in my tree - my g-g-grandmother was a Ruthwell Grierson, but no Mary that fits your dates etc.
BUT the one strange thing is my Margaret Baxter (1772-1843) who married James Underwood - her mother was Mary Richardson (c1747-1827). Knowing the Scottish naming system it seems likely there's a connection with your Mary Richardson Underwood. But I just don't have enough information to make the link.
Hopefully someone on this site will recognise the names and be able to solve the mystery. I've found the Dumfries genealogists are pretty clued up.
You've started me thinking about my Scottish relatives again. I hope we can make a link. fingers crossed!
Lesley
