OIL MINES -- All have heard more or less of the newly discovered 'Oil Mines,' so called, of Pennsylvania. They have produced great excitement in the Eastern States during the past year, and large fortunes have been made by the lucky finders. The oil is of the kind known as Petroleum, and is worth, in its crude state, 50 cents per gallon; and when clarified finds a ready market at $1 per gallon. It is an excellent article for lights as well as for all other purposes for which oil is used.

Mr. J.W. UNDERHILL, formerly a merchant of this city, is engaged in this new branch of business, both in Pennsylvania and Canada. The following extract from a letter just received by his brother, in this place, will give an account of his operations, interesting his old friends here, as well as startling to the credulity of the wonder-loving generally. This occurred in Canada. Speaking of the operations in that locality, he says:

'They dug a pit 20 feet by 8, and when they got 16 feet below the surface, the gas come up so strong as to drive the men from their work -- soon after, there was a rumbling noise in the earth and the oil burst forth into the pit. Not having any barrels ready they dug another pit and made a trench to it from the first one. The oil soon filled them both and commenced running over into the Creek. It was estimated that 1000 barrels ran out in the fist 36 hours -- ? of which was lost.'

He adds, 'it is truly one of the wonders of the age and I will write you further about it.'
