this is from a letter to my father, Dated August, 1974
I will condense it,
"My name is richard b. Umstead,born in Durham NC.umsteads arrived in granville county in 1755.
the first was john UMSTAT, wife Gwenefred, from PA
he was the Great grandson of Hans Peter UMSTADT, who arrived in Philidelphia on Oct. 12, 1685 from KREFELD a town on the Rhine river in western Europe.
I am white descendant from squire d umstead, dewitt c. umstead, raynor k umstead , My Father Richard sr. was born in rocky mount NC".
that letter i still have, it states that there were also black umsteads that were former slaves, but doesent give any names.
Yes, the Town "Gross-Umstadt" will appear on a MSN search, but the web page is in german, so you will need an interpreter, It is in south Germany before you cross the alps in to Switzerland > a real POST CARD setting you would love to go there,
