Dear Kelly, I am glad to hear from someone of Wardell's family. As you must have seen my message on this site, you have some idea of my knowledge or lack of it on the Umstead family. Josephine and Wardell had no children, but they had plenty of neices and nephews who thought highly of them both. They were a charming couple; very devoted to each other, and a very considerate part of our Graham/Tapscott family. I and others of my family also remember Wardell's sister, Ethel Umstead Graham, first wife of Josephine's first cousin John Bethel Graham. I remember Ethel as a teacher, and a very talented seamstress, who often supplied doll wardrobes which she had handmade, for church auctions, to help make money for the church's building fund. Both Ethel and Wardell were extremely personable people, who easily made and kept friends. The family knew that Wardell and Josephine had visited family in Florida, as they shared their experiences when they returned. I was too young to remember exactly which of his relatives were seen, but, as I recall, some correspondance was kept up for quite a number of years. I and my cousins had heard Wardell's mentioning a kinship with Governor Umstead of North Carolina, but had not provided all of his family history. When I was collecting data on the Graham's, I wanted to be able to provide someone with some knowledge of Wardell, his origins and his family, and was able to collect enough to provide an outline of his parents and siblings on my site at: http://worldconnect.rootsweb.com/cgi-bin/igm.cgi?db=johnfox38 The above url has no spaces in it. It is composed of all letters, numbers, and punctuation marks. I will enjoying hearing further from you. Please feel free to use my email address found on this site, or on my rootsweb site. Best regards, John Fox Winston-Salem, NC Notify Administrator about this message?
