Lorena, That's something I was told but haven't been able to verify it. John Stokes heirs rec'd 1827 lottery land; its the same lot, dist., and sect. that is on Mitchell's probate. When I had the land search done, the documentation that came back was that a 'Martha Humphrees, Ill.' was the name on the deed; Mitchell was a minor at the time and James Jones became his guardian (I posted on the GenWeb site). I later found a John Umphrees living with an Abner Stokes in 1850 Milam Co., TX.(My gr-grandfather, Ras, didn't get to Texas until 1872) An Aunt said that the family may have at one time used the name Stokes, also. I have been searching all aspects and recently found a hint; George Stokes m. Susannah McAlpin; they produced a John Stokes who m. Matilda Brown (dau. of Starke Brown). (Mitchell's middle name is 'Brown'). There is a gap in there but I have seen several Brown's connected to the Umps. Presley T. Ump., s/o Uriah, marr. the dau. of a Walter Mitchell and McAlpin. Mitchell's s-i-l was named Jesse Aldredge and Presley T.'s granddaughter was named the same. P.T.'s, Edmund's, and Mitchell's descendants all went to Texas about the same time, and some other coincidences like the similiarities in their children's names. How are you connected? You may contact me directly at bjchilders@onemain.com and maybe we can put some of this stuff together. Barb
