Hi,
I ran across an old post of yours and wondered if you now have any further information you would share. I have also been stumped for quite some time on the Umphress line. I was interested in your stories of Mitchell and was surprised at your connection to Absalom. My line goes up through James 1800 whose father was supposed by some to be an Edward or Charles Humphreys. Well, Absolum had a son Charles and all the dates fit so far. Do you know anything more? How did you conclude that Absolum was Mitchell's grandfather? If Mitchell was indeed illegitimate, as your documentation shows, he was probably born to one of Absalom's daughters, not showing up as the son of any man. I ran into this situation in my Lincoln line; this poor child didn't show up much of anywhere until I ran into some accounts listing her under her mother only. Please let me know, as I've been stumped here for years. How do you think Stokes fit it? Perhaps a stepfather, I'll look into that.
