follow up:first Umphress in N.America Barb,maybe a chink.My husband"s gggrandfather died in fla.have letter,reads as follows;Serastus Umphress,one of the extensive land owners of Hood County,Texas,is a represenative and a leading farmer,possessed of the true progressive spirit of the age,which is so rapidly transforming this state from a wild,uninhabited region into beautiful homes and farms and placing it on a par with the states that have been longer setteled.He comes from the peninsular state of the union-Florida-his birth having occured there in Jefferson county,on the fourth day of June,1851.His parents,Martha Horton and Mitchell Umphress were both natives of Ga.They had 5 sons and 3 dau.only 4 of whom are living at this writing(summer of 1896),namely Artemissa,wife of Levi Horton of Dallas county,Tx.;John Umphress,a farmer of Dallas Ct.Yx. Arphaxed Umphress,who carried on agricultural pursuits in Dallas CT.TX. and the gentlemam whose mane introduces this notice,Serastus Umphress,S.E.Umphress was reared to farm life on the old homestead and what little education he aquuired in his youth was under the instructions of his parents.The father died in Fla.in Mar.1859,but the mother is now living in Dallas Ct.with her dau.Mrs.Horton.Lived at home 22 yrs.came to Tx.1872 bought 100 acres 9 miles s.of Granbury,Hood Ct.Tx.on Oct.25th 1872 S.E. married Maggie Grubbs dau.of John and Rebecca(Kinsey)Grubbs,both natives of Florida.Family of 8 children,lost one,surviving are Lola,M.to C W Jones,Hood CT.William,Rollins,Agustis,Leila,Olen and Maggie,whom is the grandmother of Raymond Cheek, Jean Smith, Billy Cheek ,and other families.Our granny Maggie married Goe.W Cotten.
