Decatur County Journal-Iowa
Thursday, April 26, l9l7

MARY PARR was born October 27, l838, in Ohio. At the age of ten years she came with her parents to Iowa and lived in and near Cedar County for a number of years. She was united in marriage to HUGH UMPHRESS, February 28, l856. To this union were born seven children, six boys and one daughter: JAMES and ANDREW, of Garden Grove, WM. and THOMAS, of Leon, and CHAS. E., of Lorimor, Iowa. HARRY and ROSA COMBS preceded their mother to the great beyond ten years ago. The husband passed away January l4, l896.

The deceased passed away without a moment's warning, April 20, l9l7, at the age of 78 years, 5 months and 20 days, at the home of her granddaughter, MRS. ETHEL DAWSON. She leaves to mourn her departure five sons, eighteen granchildren, fourteen great-grandchildren and a host of other relatives and friends. The funeral was held at Bethel Baptist Church, Sunday, April 22, l9l7, of which she was a charter member and faithful until death. Many were the tributes of praise spoken of her by her old neighbors and friends who have heard her testimony and knew of her true Christian character. And though she was deprived of her eye sight for a number of years, she was always patient and bore her affliction bravely. The funeral was preached by Rev. Elba Dale, and the body was laid to rest beside her husband to await the resurrection morn.
