Howard, I sure wish Mitchell was the first in America but he is my brick wall instead. Mitchell Brown Umphress, my gr-gr-grandfather, was born in GA in 1814; was documented as being illegitimate (which means nothing back then); he received 1827 lottery land as (one of?) John Stokes heirs in Carroll Co., GA. He, Drury Jackson Stokes and Georgeanna Stokes, the 2 latter were Drury Stokes orphans were put under guardianship to James Jones, J.P., and in fact, performed the marriage ceremony that united Mitchell and his first wife, Sarah/Sally Webb Horton in Washington Co. Mitchell had a contract in 1836 to run mail from Jefferson Co., FL where he is documented as being a resident in 1840. The Cannady/Canada's lived not too far from him at that time. In Greene Co, GA there were several Humphrey/ies/etc. men that married Oliphant women,(one being Erastus, the same name as my gr-grandfather) and in fact, the mother, Rebecca (Rainwater) was living with and around them in 1850 census. I was told, by family history and interviews, that Mitchell's father was named John, as was his first born son, John Robert, but it could have been John Stokes. Mitchell died in 1859 of pneumonia as a result of infected tooth. The family later settled in the Dallas/Ft. Worth and Hood Co., TX area. Can anybody PLEASE help me break through this brick wall? BTW, We also carried the Umphress spelling, as much as the census-takers would allow.
