Edmund Umphress Cir 1800, who, where ???

Until the internet, I had always heard my Great, Great, Grandfather Edmund Umphress arrived in Savannah GA an orphan and was taken in and raised by a benovolent Doctor. Here on the internet I have heard he was the son of a John Umphress of Green County, GA. born abound 1811.

I recently come into possession of a letter from Edmund's grand daughter (Aunt Ernie Umphress Brown) to my grand mother written approximately fifty years ago, give or take ten years, concerning this. Here are some excerpts.

"There is not much I can tell you about my great grand
father Umphress. I do remember, while I was a very young
school kid, two Ledbetter men came to our house from
Georgia. Probably they came to visit some of their kin
folks in Ala - but I remember them giving my father a
sheet of paper which was brown with age and looked to me
like a paper sack. Their father was on the same ship my
grandpa Umphress and his parents were on, these men
said. I don't know if it was called a passport or not
but it had Grandpa Umphress's father's and mother's name
and also my Grandpa's name, which was the same as his
daddy. I believe it was James Edmund Umphress and Martha
Umphress. James Edmund and Martha was the parents names,
and Grandpa's was the same as his daddy's, and Grandpa
was three years old.

His (grandpa's) mother and papa died on board the ship
with what was called flux and was burried at sea. Great
Grandpa, before he died of course, gave this little boy
3 years old to a Ledbetter man with the understanding
that his name wouldn't be changed.

They came from Ireland or Scotland one and lived near
Savannah - I don't know how close, but in Marrietta
county -I always heard Merriweather County but I would
imagine it was merrieta County, unless there is a
Merriweather County in Ga. ( There is)My Grandfather was
married over there to Sallie Canada and they moved to
Alabama, Tallapoosa County when papa was six weeks old.

Some called papa's mother Sarah but Grandpa called her
Sallie and my sister was named after her. I always heard
Sallie and Sarah was the same. My Grand Mother Umphress
was the old old Ned Canady's daughter but I don't
remember who the mother's name was. Grandpa's mother
also had a brother named Ned Canady - which everyone
called little Ned. He was cousin John Temples' father
and you remember hearing about her (?) she lived between
the Dozier and Turners and was a first cousin of papa.
hat is why Allmead and Kate Cosby was kin to us, they
were Temple children.

Moma's dad was Jack Johnston (John Y.) and her mother
was a Grey, old Lum Grey's daughter. Moma's brother was
Sam Johnston.

Grandpa nad Grandma Umphress (Edmund and Sallie) had 16
children 8 blue eyed and 8 dark brown eyed, 8 boys and 8
girls. All of them moved to Texas after they married
except uncle Joe Umphress and papa and aunt Susie
Achiman and aunt Mat Carrol and aunt Sarah Tippit. The
boy's names were John Riley (my father), Jim, Tom, Joe,
Uriah, Jessie, Edmund (called Ed), Bill. The Girls names
were Martha, Susan, Zahitha, Nancy, Lucy, Snowden,
Jessica, and Sarah.

Grandpa Named Kate (a grandaughter)a year before he
died. It was probably 1888 when he died cause Kate's
birth day is in July and she was about a year old when
he died and Grandma died 9 years before Grandpa. And he
married twice in those 9 years but neither had any
children. His last wife lived a long time after he died.

A lot of people think we spell Umphress wrong but if we
do it was spelled Umphress this way on that passport the
Ledbetter men brought to my Dad. I know Papa used to
keep itin his little trunk and don't know what became of
it. Probably when Papa died Ma cleaned out that trunk
and packed all Papa's clothes and later the moths got in
them and she burned them all up. This is honestly all I
know."""

The letter rambles on about several things over nine
pages. I suspect aunt Ernie was in her eighties when she
wrote it. I will list the names of her parents,
brothers, and sisters and who they married.

John Riley, father, born Nov 17, 1837... died July 11,
1908, oldest child of Edmund Umphress and Sallie
