I would like to know where you recieved the information placing Edmund Umphress in Green County, son of John Umphress.

A letter from my great aunt, Ernie Umphress, to my grand mother, Mrs. L.E. Umphress, tells a totally different story. Aunt Ernie was the daughter of John Riley Umphress, oldest son of Edmund Umphress. My grand father, Luther Umphress, was the youngest son of John Riley.

According to Aunt Ernie, Edmund's parents died (of what was called "the flux???" and were burried at sea on the trip over. Before he died, Edmund's father (Edmund SR.) gave Edmund to a Ledbetter man, on the condition his name was to stay Edmund Umphress. The ledbetter man raised Edmund, at some time moving to Merriwether County, Ga from Savannah. It was in Merriwether County Edmund met and married Sallie Sarah Canaday. They moved to Talapoosa County, AL, where they are burried together (with Edmund's second wife .. no children)close to Camp Hill.

A member of the Ledbetter family visited John Riley, and brought with him the papers (much like a passport) Edmund SR. had with him on the trip over. You may be interested in knowing the spelling of " Umphress" was exactly as it is know.
