Thanks for your reply Harris. Yes there was a letter from Henry Jr. in Wythville VA., (who was brother to John who migrated to Warren Co TN, and was married to Barbara Pickle). The letter was written to Samuel, John and Barbara's son, Informing him of money he could come to collect for himself and the other heirs, that they are due from the estate of their grandmother. Apparently Samuels father was dead, and Samuel was in charge of collecting the money for all of them. This letter was written in 1844, and my g-grandfather Samuel was not born until 1864/64. I have researched the thought by the Hulets, and those asscciated with it, who originally put my Samuel in a pot with the others, such as Rebecca, Barbary's daughter, who it appears 'is' the daughter of Jesse Dixon Hulet. However, after searching the little bit of info they had, I found that it was only speculation, and that they have no really tried to figure it out. My family line is the only existing group that knew Samuel and had any information on him. I dismiss the story that he is Barbary's son for more then a few reasons, not to mention that members of my family had memories of Samuel and his life. I will send you a copy of the Henry letter we are discussing, as well as a copy of a page from Barbary Umbargers Bible, who by the way, spelled the names, Umbargo in the Bible. You will note that Arthur Umberger had years ago included a Samuel and Rebecca in the household of Barbary Umbarger. Well...Rebecca had another son named 'Samuel Rufus' and he is listed in the Bible and died as an infant. I believe that is were some of the Hulets and others connected are confused. Samuel is written in the Bible last, which would be out of order for the family record, also written in a different handwriting, and his name is spelled out Umbarger, where all the other names are Umbargo. Also, My grandmother died a couple of years ago at the age of 104, and she know Samuel very well, he lived with them throughout his life, and my father spent much time with his grandfather inspecting the mines, and just talking. I'm convinced that he was orphaned, weather it was a close realtive or a distant relative that he came from, I don't know, so I just have to keep looking everywhere. Some are lisiting the childrens names of John and Barbara Pickle Umbarger incorrectly, I think they add a Henry and a Simon. But court papers filed in Chancery Court Coffee Co list the childrens names, as heirs, and those names are not included. I will send you that info if you like. Since I don't know what U family he came from, I've investigated all the children of John and Barbara Pickle Umberger in the area, just to see if he came from a sibling of Barbary's. But Sam doesn't seem to fit, he moves out and lives with Rebecca Umberger Nunley's mother in law, Rachael Nunley as a helper, and then moves on to the mines and meets and married Beatrice Rose in Dayton TN. There is very little contact with the place he was raised, it just doesn't appear that he's bonded, but Samuel the elder, was around, and taught him to speak german, etc. I will send you a copy of the Bible page and the Henry Letter so you can see, and maybe this info will help you too someday when you run across other umberger / umbarger info. Thanks for you help, by the way, my uncle Claude Umberger in NC sent me copies of a tree you printed for someone with you name on it. Don't know how he got it, but he sent it to me.
