The spelling is how my husband's grandmother spelled her name. It is also how it is spelled on census records and all family obits that I have been able to find. On the 1920 census, they list themselves from Gali, Austria (which I believe is part of Poland now). My husband states that his grandmother, Sophie, spoke Ukrainian as did all her siblings. Her last surviving sibling died this year, but was not much help as her memory wasn't very sharp at 95. I believe her parents, Frank and Mary, migrated around 1900 based on census records. My thought is the name was changed or spelled differently.
