Why say from Poland If you from Russia Living in Germany 1945-47?

If you were born in Russia, and went to Germany in the early 1930's, then you wanted to marry a USA Millitary person from the US in 1945-1946, why would you lie and say you were from Warsaw Poland, if you were really born in Keiv Russia?

I remember reading something about how they were sending people back to where they came from. So if one came from Russia, why would they not want to go back to Russia.

Why lie about Poland?

Thanks.
