What is Ruthenian/Rusyn?
The first names were Americanized & they met & married in the US.
My suspicion about the grandfather's Finnish origins is that he seems to have faded into the background even while alive. Everything was about the grandmother, who was definitely Ukrainian, & her ethnicity & her involvement with the Ukrainian Catholic Church.
I've seen it happen before, where the husband becomes a background figure & the wife's family predominates... in that case it was the husband was the lone Republican, while the wife's large family were all Democrats. Through 50 years of records & living in their midst, he seemed to be a non-person.
Also, when searching the US census for any foreign born Harkalas... all were born in Finland. Still, I won't rule out his being Ukrainian.
