If the family said they are Ukrainian why the doubt? The word harka /harkala might mean something in Ukrainian.
What religion were your ancestors?I want to venture out and say they are Ruthenian/Rusyn. Judging by their first name I would not say Finnish.
They needed to have a common language.If they married in "old country" than the villages would be within 10 miles radius. Even if they married in "new country" the common language still plays a role. People from a village traveled together to the new land and only to the place where they knew were their "own" people.You need to establish a precise place of birth in the "old country" and once there you might find where they originally came.
