Chlystek, Filip, Kovalcik
I have already posted this on the Austria, Slovak Republic, and Poland forums but it was suggested I post it here:
My great-great grandmother,Julia Kovalcik, according to her death certificate, was born to Paul and Julia(daughter Julia's marriage application has her mother's name as Lizibeth) Kovalcik. She was born February 16, 1874 in Saris, Austria, Europe (is how the death certificate has) and that is also the birthplace of her parents. She died May 16, 1936 in Bradenville, Pennsylvania, but other places she had lived in were Johnstown, Uniontown and possibly Greensburg, PA.
I have Julia's marriage application- her first name is listed as Ullyana and she married John/Johann Filipp (I think eventually one p was dropped)his parents names are Emery and Anna Filipp. They married October 20, 1891 at St. Stephenhung Church in Johnstown, I have written to a St. Stephen's that is still in Johnstown but have had no response from them. He is listed as 30 years old and her 21 (this doesn't jive with her birthdate, she would have been 17). Johann died before 1898, but haven't found any records here that could help me on this, but in Julia and John's daughter's, she also was named Julia, marriage record through the church it says that she was born in Spis, but she wasn't born til February 16, 1893(exact day of her mom???) in Johnstown. Possibly could the Filip's be from Spis? Would Spis and Saris be close? The first Julia Kovalcik married John Filip first, second husband was John Slivosky, and third husband was Paul Vogas. Daughter Julia Filip married Stanislaus Chlystek on November 9, 1909 in Uniontown, PA. In these church records is where it says Julia Filip's birthplace was Spis. Stanislaus Chlystek's birthplace was Galicia, and in these records Chlystek is spelled- Glystek and Hrusek. In 1920 U.S. census records it has Stanislaus' birthplace as Russia, mother tongue as Polish, and is the same for his parents. I have had someone suggest alternate spellings for Chlystek- Hylstiak, Glystiak,or Chlystak. For their marriage as a witness is an Andy Kovalcik and as Godparent to their first born, my grandma, is Andreas Kovalcik. It says in Stanislaus' death notice in the newspaper that his funeral was at the Greek Orthodox churh.
I have tried searching at the Ellis Island website for all but haven't come up with anything either.
I'm not sure if all this makes sense, but maybe someone has come across these names and could offer help, or if anyone has any suggestions that could narrow my search down I sure would appreciate it.
Thank you,
Pattie Bartel
