Ashley,
You're jumping around too much.
You have to methodically trace Apolonia's backgd and then work backwards.
If Apolonia was Roman Catholic, chances are great that she was indeed ethnically Slovak.Rusyns in that time frame from that area were predominantly Greek Catholic or Christian Orthodox.
For the time being set the information about the Romanian branch of the Galbavi clan aside.
It can only confuse issues for now. Just because Galbavi is not a popular name in the States, does not mean that it was/is a small clan in Eastern Europe. It also predates the information you need for your next step.
Follow up on VAG (Szered) !That's where she was born.Generally villagers in that time frame did not travel very far from their villages of birth. If they went from one village to another, it was because of marriage. You are searching a non-digitized world and LDS has a long way to go in filming Eastern Europe records. You will most likely have to do an archival inquiry in Hungary. One of the links I posted will help you get the how to info.As I pointed out to you, my exp w/Hungarian Archives is negligible.
According to Apolonia's immigration records, her father's given name was JANOS, but you need the names of her mother and all her siblings. You also have a direct connection to Apolonia's Pecha cousins.Chances are Apolonia's mother was a Pecha.
RE Szliwa/Sliwa.
Do a little history research re area.Genealogy is very much like a jigsaw puzzle. The history of the area will help with matching the colors of the pieces.
The Austro-Hungarian Empire was a multicultural arena. There were about 15 different languages spoken within the Empire. In the time frame you are researching the Slovaks were an ethnic group. There was no Slovakia per se, just as there was no Poland or Ukraine in that time frame. Poland and Ukraine were East and West Galicia, part of the Austro Hungarian Empire. The Austro Hungarian domain also reached into the Balkan Peninsula, which you would readily recognize as the former Yugoslavia.Although technically WW1 was officially declared because a Serb assassinated the Austro Hungarian heir apparent, it was this forced polyglot of ethnic groups and the Empire's approach of divide and rule, that was the real cause for the war.
