The name Shermet or Sheremet may come from Kishinev in Bessarabia, now known as Moldavia. It was part of the Pale of SEttlement in southwestern Russia. The Shermets (probably the 'e' was dropped at Ellis Island) did come over in the early 1900's, and spread thru New York and up to Canada. This was family was Jewish, of course, and I am a cantor in Omaha, Nebraska. For my Masters Thesis I did research on the Jewish music of Bessarabia, in a partial attempt to find out more about our family.I know where a few of our relatives are, if you are interested, and there is probably a link to Sheremetyevo Airport, something I have wondered about also.
My grandfather, Sam Shermet, was one of 8 or 10 children - it was never easy to pin him down on information, because life in the old country had been so abysmal.
