Surname - Malec + Smuk
Posted by: Aidan (ID *****3082) Date: October 15, 2012 at 11:18:58

Hi, my grandparents immigrated to Australia after WW2 and had the surname Malec and Smuk (before she married). I'm wondering if anyone knows where these surnames originate from and if anyone could give me clues to whether they're indeed Ukrainian, which region they originate from etc...

I'm aware that it may be pronounced as follows; Маличь - with a soft -ch sound.

As for Smuk, I'd imagine it would simply be; Смак?

I'm uncertain of which region they lived in prior to WW2 but I have a feeling it may've been in the Galicia region.

If anyone can find records of full lists of name would you please be kind enough to show me the search engines? I don't know any family passed my grandparents on this half of the family.

Thanks in advance!
