surname on baptismal record in Latin

I have my grandfather's baptismal record from the LDS metrical films in 1885. The surname of his mother is given as Chatus (this is in Latin). The surname of one of the godparents looks to be the same so I don't think it's a Latin term. Anyone have any idea of what this Ukrainian surname might be? There's a common notation in these records - natu or natus whch means "born as" when giving the unmarried name of a woman but I don't think this is what Chatus means here.
