Deciphering the writing on an old photograph.
My great-grandfather was born in Odessa in about 1886 and moved from Voznesensk to America around the turn of the 20th century. I have this photo that is said to be of his father:
Front: http://i155.photobucket.com/albums/s301/autofyrsto/Karanczak1.jpghttp://i155.photobucket.com/albums/s301/autofyrsto/Karanczak1.jpg
Back: http://i155.photobucket.com/albums/s301/autofyrsto/KaranczakBack1.jpghttp://i155.photobucket.com/albums/s301/autofyrsto/KaranczakBack1.jpg
Back (upside-down): http://i155.photobucket.com/albums/s301/autofyrsto/KaranczakBack1-1.jpghttp://i155.photobucket.com/albums/s301/autofyrsto/KaranczakBack1-1.jpg
On the front, can anyone identify whether the man is wearing a specific type of uniform? Those pants are pretty far out. On the back, can anyone read what is left of the handwriting, or even identify the language? It does not look like any alphabet I've ever seen (not that I've seen a whole lot of languages or anything).
Much obliged!
