David,
I looked through the little bits of info available on ancestry for Ireland but did not find your family.
I checked what they have for 1841/1851 census abstracts - as you know there was very little saved.
I also looked at the index for Irish marriages 1771-1812 to see if I could find any Smiths in area of Co. Monaghan but found nothing.
I also tried looking at the Irish records database which says it includes unique sources but I did not find David there.
I'm sorry I have not been able to help you at all with this but as you know the records are few and far between for Ireland. I'm amazed you have as much as you do already.
