Hi Sue, Well, with the births of your mom and siblings being in the 1920-30's they will not be in the Scottish census, but I looked for Mark Pringle. Since you said Sandy's actual name was Alexander I think this is probably the right Mark. There is a naming tradition in Scotland that was followed by many families. 1st son named after the father's father 2nd son named after the mother's father 3rd son named after the father 1st daughter named after the mother's mother 2nd daughter named after the father's mother 3rd daughter named after the mother this was not always followed but it can help when looking at families. Also if , for instance the name of the mother's father and father's father were the same that would put everything out of order a bit. But, still it does help. When looking for you Mark there was really only one that seemed likely as he was of right age to have children born when your mother and siblings were born. And - his father's name is Alexander which made it seem even more likely. Also Alexander is a railway signalman which makes sense with Mark doing the same work later on. 1901, DENISTOUN, GLASGOW SPRINBURN, LANARKSHIRE, - BALORNOCK RD. PRINGLE Alexander, age 34, railway signalman, born Lander, Berwickshire Mary, wife, age 33, born Wishaw , Lanarkshire Robert, son, age 8, scholar, born Mossend, Lanarkshire Alexander, son, age 5, born Glasgow, Lanarkshire Mary, daughter, age 3, born Glasgow, Lanarkshire Mark, son, age 1, born Glasgow, Lanarkshire BINNIE, John, boarder, railway signalman, born Wishaw, Lanarkshire ** I wonder if John Binnie is just a boarder or if he is a relative as he is born same place as Mary. 1891 BLYTHSWOOD, GLASGOW ST. GEORGE, LANARKSHIRE - 21 SHAMROCK ST. PRINGLE Alexander, age 24, lodger, railway servant, born Easleton, Berwickshire 1881 MELROSE, MELROSE, ROXBURGHSHIRE PRINGLE Robert, age 51, agric. labourer, born Whitekirk, Haddingtonshire Elizabeth, age 50, wife of Agric. labourer, born Edinburgh, Midlothian Alexander, son, age 15, agric. labourer, born Lauder, Berwickshire Elizabeth, daughter, age 14, Agric. labourer, born Stow, Midlothian Peter, son, age 5, born Lauder, Berwickshire ** I was happy to see that Alexander did name his eldest son after his father to keep the tradition alive. Not sure yet of the other children. 1871 LAUDER LANDWARD, LAUDER, BERWICKSHIRE - ADINSTONS PRINGLE Robert, age 42, Ag. lab. born Whitekirk, Haddingtonshire William A., son, age 17, Ag. lab., born Stanton, Haddingtonshire Betrice, daughter, age 13, house keeper, born Bollam, Haddingtonshire Mary, daughter, age 12, scholar, born Bollam, Haddingtonshire Mark, son, age 9, scholar, born Humbie, Haddingtonshire Margaret, daughter, age 7, scholar, born Lauder, Berwickshire Alexander, son, age 5, scholar, born Lauder, Berwickshire Elizabeth, daughter, age 4, born Stow, Midlothian *** I had wondered where wife Mary was, but next census explains - I guess Robert's first wife must have died and he remarried to Mary later on. 1861 HUMBIE, HUMBIE, EAST LOTHIAN, UPPER KEITH PRINGLE Robert, age 32, ploughman, born Whitekirk, Haddingtonshire Margaret, wife, age 37, ploughman's wife, born Stenton, Haddingtonshire Ann, step-daughter, age 14, Ag. lab. born Stenton, Haddingtonshire Barbara, daughter, age 12, born Stenton, Haddingtonshire William, stepson, age 7, scholar, born Stenton, Haddingtonshire Beatrice, daughter, age 3, born Bolton, Haddingtonshire Mary, daughter, age 1, born Bolton, Haddingtonshire BLAIR, William, boarder, age 22, mason's labourer, born Stenton, Haddingtonshire ** if Ann and William are step children then Barbara likely is to although she is not shown as such. 1851 YESTER, GIFFORD, EAST LOTHIAN PRINGLE Robert, age 22, lodger, occupation: drainer, born Whitekirk, Haddingtonshire William Pringle, age 19, lodger, occupation: drainer, born Whitekirk, Haddingtonshire This next is the only Robert Pringle that seems to fit at all for the right age. In other census he is shown as born Whitekirk, Haddingtonshire. In 1841 Haddingtonshire is not given as a choice of counties, so I looked in East Lothian which is the same area. 1841 ATHELSTANEFORD, EAST LOTHIAN - GARLETON PRINGLE Mark, age 40, Ag. lab. born East Lothian Beaty, age 40, born East Lothian Elisabeth, age 15, born East Lothian Robert, age 12, born East Lothian James, age 10, born East Lothian Peter, age 9, born East Lothian Jean, age 7, born East Lothian John, age 5, born East Lothian ** I looked back to see how Robert named his children and if we look at the children born after his step children - there are Beatrice, Mary, Mark, Margaret, Alexander and Elizabeth I think we could assume that Margaret already named a daughter after her own mother and likely one after her first husband's mother (Ann & Barbara and William was likely named after her first husband's father) So then, Mark would be named after Robert's father and that fits. Beatrice would be named after Robert's mother and that fits as well. Then the other children would likely be named after brothers, sisters, etc. I looked for Grace Boyd but I am guessing she was not yet born when the 1901 census was out. Is that right? Was your grandmother Grace born in Great Harwood? I looked it up and it says it is in Lancashire, England. Do you know her parents names? I'll be happy to look more for you if you have their names and where they lived. Carolyn L Notify Administrator about this message?
