The Surname "UHL" is the German derivation of its Welsh Component, "YULE" or "EWELL"". Pronounced exactly the same, "Yool" (actually another spelling, believe it or not), it means "courier", and is usually seen in combination with a stage coach or man on horseback, carrying a rolled-up/tied heraldic paper. The UHL spelling is exceedingly old, with a specific band of Welsh immigrants into German lands during the middle to later 1080's. Howbeit Welsh in the main, the UHL name is primarily German, with some of the name being found even as early the 8th or 9th Century in the Rhine and German territories. The name has been associated with "Uhler", "Uhles", "Ule", "Hule"/"Yhule", "Hull", "Khul"/"Khule", "Jeu/Jew-", "Ghu/ Ghe-", and other spellings. There are a great number of Uhl geneologists researching the name, and most tend to agree that the so-called "Welsh Connection" is, at the least, a "curious" sideline.
