Re: My End Note Problem---An Ugly Solution

My sincere thanks to Ruth Mickelson and John Moran for taking the time to assist me.

After a lot of trial and error, I have found an ugly way to create a Word document containing endnotes and an index that I want and one that can be opened with Word. I am posting the solution here in case someone else has this problem and also because someone with more experience than me can perhaps look at my ugly solution, determine what is fundamentally wrong, and suggest an elegant solution.

Basically my problem is: I am running UFT 3.1 with Windows XP. I can create a Family Journal and launch it directly to Word through the External Support tab contained within the UFT Print Setup options. I assume that since a normal Word document is created that my path to from UFT to Word is correct, ipso facto. I can create foot notes and/or an index within this Word document but I cannot create endnotes. OR instead of launching my Family Journal to Word I can launch it to the UFT Editor and by using Append End Notes under Tools I can generate the end notes I want. But, when I save it as a Word file in the folder I want, Word will not open it.

So, my ugly solution is: Step 1---Launch the Family Journal from UFT to Word. Do not create foot notes but do create the Index wanted (in my case the Classic style with two columns). Call this Document 1. I can open this document and do all the editing I want in it but I can not create end notes. Step 2---Launch the Family Journal from UFT to the UFT Editor, and create endnotes through the Append End Notes options under Tools. Save this in the desired Word folder and call it Document 2. Note that Word will not open this document. So, go to the XP Search option and find Document 2. The “Open With” feature gives two choices, Word and Word Pad. Word will not open the document but Word Pad will. So, open the document with Word Pad and save it as a Word file and call it Document 3. Now, Word will open Document 3. So, by using Word Pad as an interim step I now have a Word document, containing endnotes that I can work with in the normal fashion. There is only one problem with Document 3---the index codes have been removed so an index cannot be created. But by going to Document 1 that was created in Step 1 and using the mouse to copy the index----the index can be pasted into Document 3. Now I finally have a document containing all the features I want---endnotes and an index.

I said it was ugly, but I am relieved to have a solution at all. If anyone can see what went wrong that requires the use of Word Pad as a solution, I would sure appreciate knowing what it is.
