Ron,
I think Circa (or ca)implies that you have some good reason for a specific year, e.g. a census return. If you are just making a guess, I think you should use Estimate (est), and give a brief reason for how you did the calculation (e.g. "est 1840 (based on marriage)"). Or you could leave the free-form and structured dates blank, and just set the sort date field.
