I don't know if this qualifies as a better idea, but it seems that you want to be able to see your informal sources (notebooks) but not print thim in reports.
Have you considered boning up on the RTF spec and trying to "hide" your informal sources from the UTF report writer? By that I mean, enter the notebooks as you would any other source, but add coding as needed to hide from MSWord, or whatever.It doesn't seem any more exotic than using Excel.
Or not. Definitely not for the faint hearted....
